2x + y = 17
To solve for y, subtract 2x from both sides;
y = 17 - 2x

To solve for x, subtract y from both sides;
2x = 17 - y
Divide both sides by 2;

x = (17-7)/(2) = (17)/(2) - (y)/(2)

x=8.5- (y)/(2)
