it's controversial because there are debates about who has rights to the land, but the textbook version is that they were displaced after the holocaust and/or they fled there during the holocaust.

They believed that that was there promise land and that god had promised that land for them and the jews were tired of being kicked out of wherever they went so they wanted a place to stay where nobody can kick them out
