A cross section is the 2D shape that is formed when a 3D object is cut, or sliced. If you cut a hexagonal prism vertically, the face of the side that is cut will form a rectangle.

A cross section is the shape you see when you make one slice through a solid. A solid can have many different cross sections depending on where you make the slice. Consider the following hexagonal pyramid. Cross sections perpendicular to the base and through the vertex will be triangles.
