Read the complete problem before answering. Tessa made a block tower that was 1 1/8 ft tall. She made a second block tower that was 2 3/4 ft tall. What was the combined height of the towers? A student solved the problem this way: 1 1/8 + 2 3/4 = 1 1/8 + 2 6/8 = 3 7/8 The combined height of the towers was 3 7/8 ft tall. Use a similar strategy to solve this problem. Martina made a block tower that was 2 1/3 ft tall. She had a toy giraffe that was 1 1/3 ft tall. She had another tower that was 3 1/4 ft tall. How tall would the towers be if placed one on top of the other?

5 7/12 because 2 1/3 + 3 1/4 = 67/12 (or 5 7/12) This can be shown as:                    2 4/12 + 3 3/12 = 5 7/12
