The factors involved in the direction of low pressure centers across the contiguous United States are the circulation cells and the earth's rotation. The circulation cells are powered by heat of the sun. This causes the rising and condensing of air moving towards the northern hemisphere. Generally, storms move across the contiguous USA from west to east because of the equilibrium between the pressure force and the earth's rotation known commonly as the "Coriolis Effect".
