take 8 1/2 and turn it into 8 4/8 then add it to 5 1/8 to get the total of 13 5/8

First write down the equation:

+5
Transform the mixed numbers into improper fractions.

5
=
Now add:
17×4=68
2×4=8
+
41×1=41
8
×1=8
68+41=109
=
