Although generally perceived to be a genocide by the international community, the 1994 killing of approximately 800,000 Tutsis in Rwanda was seen at the time by Hutus as -- its Letter A.

I would venture to say that this genocide against the Tutsis was seen by the Hutus as a form of ethnic cleansing - not sure about a word starting with A- but in fact it was the brutal massacre of the Tutsis that could have been prevented if the UN envoy Romeo Dallaire's warnings had been heeded by the UN. It is felt that since there were no major resources to be obtained in Rwanda that the major powers just turned a blind eye to it.
