Directions: Simplify the following expressions. Refer to the rules for signed numbers in solving these problems.

Example: - 4 + 5 = +1 (the signs are different, take the difference (subtract) and place the sign of the larger number)

1. + 2 - (+3) =

2. + 11 + (-10) =

3. 3 + (-5 ) =

4. + 22 - 21 =

5. - 8 - (-44) =

6. -12 - (-6 ) + 3 =

7. + 16 -(-12) =

8. - 36 - (-36) =

9. -4 * 10 =

10. -1 * -1 =

11. + 7 * - 7 =

12. -4 / 4 =

13. -7 * -5 =

14. -10 * + 8 =

15. -2 * - 7 =

Explanation:

remember, when 2 signs collide (like a mathematical operation and the sign of an operand of that operation), the following is always true (for additions/subtractions and multiplications/divisions) :

+ + = +

+ - = -

- + = -

- - = +

and don't forget : when a number or term is positive, we usually don't write the sign. only the mathematical operation.

1. 2 - 3 = -1

2. 11 - 10 = 1

3. 3 - 5 = -2

4. 22 - 21 = 1

5. -8 + 44 = 36

6. -12 + 6 + 3 = -3

7. 16 + 12 = 28

8. -36 + 36 = 0

9. -4 × 10 = -40

10. -1 × -1 = 1

11. 7 × -7 = -49

12. -4 / 4 = -1

13. -7 × -5 = 35

14. -10 × 8 = -80

15. -2 × -7 = 14
