The plan for the 1971 operation to shut down the Chi Minh Trail was aimed at shutting down the North Vietnamese Army's capabilities to provide supplies to the forces in the south. The plan was for South Vietnamese troops to invade Laos and take control of the Trail with aid from American air support. The plan didn't go as planned. The South Vietnamese forces were soundly defeated by their Northern counterparts.
