How can splinter parties affect the outcomes of elections

they can play a spoiler role in elections by taking critical votes from a major party e.g. Ross Perot in 92 took votes from Bush and Ralph Nader in 2000 took votes from Gore.

Splinter parties can cause the public vote and electoral vote in some cases to be split. Take for example Taft Roosevelt and Wilson. Roosevelt runs as a progressive and it splits his votes with Taft leading Wilson to win the election
