A 10-speed bicycle tire has a diameter of 27 in. In highest gear, the tire rotates 3.4 times with each petal turn. About how far does the bike travel, in this gear, with each pedal turn?

It travels 288.252 in.

We first find the circumference, or distance around, the tire. The formula for circumference is C=πd:
C=3.14(27) = 84.78 in.

Since it rotates 3.4 times per petal turn in this gear, we multiply this by the circumference:
3.4(84.78) = 288.252 in
