"An edge city" is a large clustering of service facilities and residential areas near highway intersections...

An edge city is an American expression for a centralization of business, shopping, and diversion outside a conventional downtown or focal business region in what had already been a private or country region. The term was advanced by the 1991 book Edge City: Life on the New Frontier by Joel Garreau, who built up its present connotation.
