Item B is not correct because the truth is just its opposite. Charlemagne went to war with the Lombard kingdom in northern Italy and defeated them in 774. He took over some of the Lombard territory himself, but gave other parts of it to the pope at Rome, which created the Papal States as a territory over which the pope governed. That was during the papacy of Adrian I. In 800, the next pope, Leo III, crowned Charlemagne as "Emperor of the Romans" -- a position which came to be known as the "Holy Roman Emperor." There was a strong, supportive relationship between Charlemagne and the popes.
