What sort of trade-offs do you think engineers make between functionality, safety, and aesthetics when building a real bridge?

They make sure the bridge is functional and safe before the add the
aesthetics

It seems in this day and age aesthetics is the main priority then safety and functionality lagging behind. as long as it looks pretty and is safe people don't really care how well it works you just make do!
