1.) When Jack hits Piggy and breaks his glasses. Piggy’s glasses symbolize structure and the last part of their old lives.
2.) The conch shell which Ralph uses to call all of the meetings with. This symbolizes the newly formed democracy on the island. The conch is broken at the same time that Piggy dies, killed by Roger, who is the Sadist in the book.
3.) Once Simon finds out that the monster that Sam and Eric saw earlier in the book is just a dead pilot, he goes to tell the others. The boys think that Simon is the dreaded “beastie” and kill him.
The boys also start a chant while on the island, “Kill the beast! Cut its throat! Spill it’s blood!”
