The slope of a line is measured by the “rise”/“run.” The rise is your “y” coordinate, and the run is your “x” coordinate.
Looking at this graph, if we start at (0,0) and move 1 point to the left, our new coordinates are (1,-2). If we move 1 point to the left again, our new coordinates are (2,-4). We only need two sets of coordinates to calculate our slope.
The formula to calculate the slope of a line is:
(y2 - y1)/(x2-x1)
Now, all we have to do is plug in our coordinates, so:
(-4 - -2)/(2 - 1)
(-2)/(1) = -2
The slope of the line is -2.
