What is ironic about the ending of the poem “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Rose?

Even though people thought that Richard Cory was happy because of his status, wealth, and manner, Cory himself was not happy, and at the end of the poem, "[Richard Cory] went home and put a bullet in his head"
