During metaphase phase of mitosis the chromosomes line up on a plane equidistant from the two spindle poles. Metaphase is the third phase of mitosis, the type of cell division which takes place in the somatic cells where a parent cell divides into two diploid daughter cells. During this phase the cell's chromosomes align themselves in the middle of the cell called the equator.
