totems

Not all cultures would refer to them as "totems," but that Native American word (of Ojibwe origin) is useful for describing objects held as sacred within spiritual or religious traditions. Sometimes these totem objects are seen as embodying spiritual presences in them. "Zuni fetishes," incidentally, are small carvings of animals and such in the culture of the Zuni (one of the Pueblo peoples in western North America).
