Let's assume

number of dimes in coin as 'd'

number of quarters in coin as 'q'

we are given

total number of coins is 16

so, we get

d+q=16

we know that

1 dime =$0.10

1 quarter=$0.25

we have

he has $2.20 in his pocket

so, we get equation as

0.10d+0.25q=2.2

so, we get system of equation as

d+q=16

0.10d+0.25q=2.2

Firstly, we will solve for q from first equation

q=16-d

now, we can plug back q

0.10d+0.25(16-d)=2.2

0.10d+4-0.25d=2.2

-0.15d=-1.8

now, we can solve for d

d=12

now, we can solve for q

q=16-12

q=4

so,

number of dimes coins are 12

number of quarter coins are 4...........Answer
