I think the definition of planetary differentiation is the separation of materials based on density. It involves separating out different constituents of a planetary body as a result of their physical or chemical characteristics, such that each body develops into compositionary distinct layers; such that the denser materials of a planet sink at the center while less dense materials rise to the surface.
