I believe the function of RNA polymerase is that it unwinds the double helix and adds nucleotides to a growing strand of RNA. This enzymes synthesizes RNA following a strand of DNA which acts as a primer. It is responsible for the copying of DNA sequence into an RNA sequence, during the process called transcription which takes place in the nucleus of a cell.
