Both reasons would be part of a theory called survival of the fittest. This means that species will produce more than the environment can withstand. The environment is not able to supply enough food for the millions of eggs. This leads to only the strongest of the species surviving, leaving the others to starve. The second reason would be because of disease. The disease could spread quickly between members of the population, killing most that are not fit enough to withstand it.
