Explanation:

3x + y = 17

x + 2y = 49

If you multiply the first equation by -2 and then add you will eliminate the 'y' term

-2(3x + y) = -2(17)

-6x - 2y = -34

+ x + 2y = 49

-5x = 15

x = -3

-3 + 2y = 49

2y = 52

y = 26
