The sole purpose of meiosis is the production of gametes, or in other words, sex cells. Unlike in mitosis, the daughter cells are not identical to the parent cell. They have half of the number of chromosomes of the parent cell, so in short the cell that is produced is different.

Mitosis on the other hand, produces identical cells, or daughter cells that are identical to the parent cell, which makes them purposeful in growth and wound repair. They produce the same kind of cell, each time.
