A department store wraps gifts for its customers. What is the amount of wrapping paper it would take to wrap a gift box with a width of 8 inches, a height of 6 inches , and a length of 5 inches ?

So, we know that the amount of wrapping paper necessary is equal to the surface area or net of the box.
Solve for the surface area of the box.
First side: 8*6=48
Second side: 8*6=48
Third side: 6*5=30
Fourth side: 6*5=30
Fifth side: 5*8=40
Sixth side: 5*8=40
Now, add up the areas of the sides.
48+48+30+30+40+40=236 inches
