What do nationalism and imperialism have to do with one another?

Nationalism fuels imperialism.

It does this as nationalism fueled the want to imperialize more nations to show the power of their own nation. Some theories back then included one that stated that the amount of territory owned showed the amount of strength a nation had. If we applied that theory to nationalism and imperialism, then those who are strongly nationalistic would want the be imperialistic as well in order to show off the strength and power of their nation.
