Please solve these three questions on ratios.

1) The combined mass of two boxers, Connor and Patrick is 153kg. These weights are in the ratio 8:9.
Work out how much heavier Patrick is than Connor. (3 marks)

2) Tim and Savannah share some sweets in the ratio of 1:2. Savannah gets 50 sweets.
How many does Tim get? (2 marks)

3) Holly, Wei-Kong and Wilfred all get paid the same hourly rate. In one week Holly works twice as long as Wei-Kong and Wei-Kong works for three times as many hours as Wilfred. Their total wages that week is £850.
Work out how much Hollie receives. (2 marks)

Answer 1

Question 1:

Connor : Patrick = 8 : 9
Total Parts = 8 + 9 = 17
17 parts = 153 kg

Find 1 parts:
1 part = 153 ÷ 17 = 9kg

Find 8 parts:
8 parts = 8 x 9 = 72kg

Find 9 parts:
9 parts = 9 x 9 = 81 kg

Connor : Patrick = 8 : 9 = 72kg : 81 kg

81 - 72 = 9kg

Answer: Partick is 9 kg heavier than Connor.

Question 2:

Tim and Savannah = 1 : 2
2 parts = 50 sweets

Find 1 part :
1 part = 50 ÷ 2 = 25

Answer: Tim gets 25 sweets

Question 3:

Holly : Wei Kong : Wilfred
6 : 3 : 1

Total Parts = 6 + 3 + 1 = 10
10 parts = ⇒£850

Find 1 part :
1 part = £850 ÷ 10 = £85

Find 6 parts :
6 parts = £85 x 6 = £510

Answer: Hollie receives £510
