How did the concept of mutually assured destruction influence the Cold War

Mutually Assured Destruction could almost be described as a longing threat for both countries. Since both the Soviet Union and the United States has nuclear weapons, if one fired the other country will too. This would mean the eventual downfall of both nations, so the two countries held threats from a distance.
