The mood is sad. She dies in the end. It talks about war. Also it talks about sickness.

The mood seems to be somber.
Because of the realization that someone had died. The last sentence/phrase "No one expected her to die gives the passage a sad feeling. Making the reader feel the sadness of the "Major"/ character.
