Why did Truman believe Greece needed American aid in 1947

In the postwar period the Truman Doctrine was inaugurated, which, among other things, aimed to keep European countries away from Soviet communism. Thus, in 1947, with the growth of communism in Greece, the American president decided to intervene and to support the governments that did their interests in the region.
