In the Balinese production of “The Tempest” written originally by Shakespeare, the play was dance and performed by the Balinese artists. The artists performed with the masks, shadow puppets and music which was performed by the Gamelan orchestra of the Indonesian Consulate of New York. Desak Suartilaksmi played the role of Ariel in this performance. He also set Shakespeare’s lines from “The Tempest” to original Balinese music adding the traditional sacred chants to it. The Balinese were very traditional in their views and they didn’t supported violence or war, rather they wanted to answer war with art.
