A hyphen is used to divide a word at the end of the line when there is no more space to accommodate the whole word. However, there are several rules to follow. One is never to divide one syllable words. Another is the hyphen should always be at the end of the first line and never at the beginning of the second line. Proper nouns and proper adjectives should never be divided. When dividing a hyphenated word, use the hyphen that is already in the word. Do not divide a word that is at the end of the line if the other part of the word will be in another page.
