I believe the answer is: Slavery
They both actually have a very different view on slavery. Thornwell is actually in the support of slavery because he believed that it allowed in Christian's bible due to some verse that dictates how Christians should treat the slaves.
Barnes on the other hand, believes that slavery is Evil and shall be eliminated.
