The apoplastic route moving between connected cell walls without crossing the cell membrane is believe to be responsible for the rapid water exchange in plant cells. Apoplast is the space outside the plasma membrane within which material can diffuse freely. The apoplastic route allows access to the xylem and phloem is along the margins of secondary roots, it facilitates the transport of water and solutes across a tissue or organ.
