Cindy left a small glass of salt water outside on her windowsill on a warm day. She remembered the glass a couple days later, but when she went to get it, she discovered that the water was gone and all that was left in the glass was a layer of salty residue. If the salt and water were well mixed when Cindy took the glass outside, how did this happen?

Answer:

The salt ions and water molecules remained separate, and the water evaporated while the salt did not.

When the glass of salt water was outside, the water evaporated leaving behind the minerals, in this case, salt.
