Absolutely, Roosevelt belonged to the Progressive wing of the Republican Party and advocated for strict government control of railroads, the trust-busting regulations and sanitary control of food and drugs. He also championed natural conservation. Taft on the other hand, was part of the Conservative wing of the Republican Party and favored private interests over the general welfare.
His policies were very reactionary and Roosevelt decided that because Taft did not have the best interest of the majority of the population at heart, he was unfit to be President of the United States. Roosevelt created the Progressive Party to split up the votes of the Republican Party and Taft lost the 1912 elections to Woodrow Wilson.
