It's always a great idea to use a number line when you are solving problems like these. In the first problem we are starting at positive 3, so go to the number 3 on the number line. Then we are adding a negative 1, so we need to go back 1 on the number line. If we added a positive 1 we would need to go forward 1, but since this is a negative 1 we need to go backwards.

When you go back 1 from 3, you should get 2! Try this method for any other problem as well.
