The coefficient is the number in front of y. Y is considered variable because any number could be substituted for y, so y it is not a constant number.

= -2.5y + 8y - 10.5y
combine like terms
= 5.5y - 10.5y
= -5y

ANSWER: A) -5

Hope this helps! :)
