The Allied invasion of Sicily began on the night of 9 to 10 July 1943 and ended on 17 August with an Allied victory. The invasion of the island was called Operation Husky and began with a large amphibious and aerial operation, followed by a six-week land campaign that began the Italian campaign.

Although the operation was hailed as a success, it is estimated that some 100,000 Axis soldiers escaped to Italy. Due to the Allied naval and air superiority, the fact that so many soldiers escaped is considered an Axis victory.

This landing had a direct influence on the bloody Eastern Front, where the Germans were running Operation Citadel. Fearing that the Allies would occupy Italy and jump to the Balkans, Hitler ordered the suspension of "Citadel", and Germany went on the defensive in the Eastern Front since then.
