Why did fear of communism sweep the nation in the late 1940s and 1950s?

The arm race, the increased militarization of the soviet union and the take over of several eastern European states and infiltration of communist influence in the USA led to the red scare. It was characterized by McCarthyism, as a result USA panicked that revolutions would start that would transform USA to a communist state.
