The historical period of the two world wars, as well as the period between these, is mostly characterised by a sense of loss. Literature, the visual arts and music often presented a sense of sadness at the loss of lives, direction, youth, peace and many other elements that made life more positive in the years before the wars. There was also a sense of aimlessness, and artists often called people who lived through these difficult times the "lost generation." Some examples of artistic depictions that exemplify how the wars affected people are The Sun Also Rises or Fiesta by Ernest Hemingway, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and the work of Dada artists and painters such as Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst.
