Answer: D. In both situations, France was governed by a monarchy

Step-by-step explanation:

The French Revolution (1789) overthrew the monarchy and founded a republic. These events led to a political disturbance, that ended in a dictatorship under Napoleon. After the fall of Napoleon in 1814, the Bourbon Restoration restored the monarchy to the brothers of Louis XVI.

However, opposite to the absolutist Ancien RĂ©gime, the new regime installed during the Restoration period was a constitutional monarchy, with limits on its authority.

The correct answer is: D) in both situations, France was governed by a monarchy.

Before and after the revolutionary and napoleonic eras, France was ruled by members of the Bourbon House. In the years prior to the Revolution, the king of France was Louis XVI, who governed the country between 1774 and 1792. During the Revolution, he was accused of conspiring with foreign powers against France and was executed. In 1814, after the fall of Napoleon, Louis XVIII (Louis XVII never ruled) was crowned as king of France. He ruled from 1814 to 1824, however in 1815, Napoleon briefly retuned to power in the Hundred Days campaign.
