Mg has an atomic mass (number of protons/electrons) of 12 and S has an atomic mass of 16.
For both elements to gain a full outer shell, Mg loses 2 electrons and S gains 2 electrons. This will leave Mg with 10 electrons (full valence shell) and S with 18 (full valence shell).
