Read the excerpt from "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud."

The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

Answer:

The waves also dance in the breeze, but the daffodils seem happier than the waves. We know from Dorothy Wordsworth’s journal (see "In a Nutshell") that the day that inspired this poem was a stormy one, so the waves on this medium-to-large sized lake must have been larger than usual. Maybe they were even cresting into whitecaps.

The correct statements are:

  • 2) "They flash upon that inward eye" uses alliteration to illustrate a point. (Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds, as seen in the repeated "th" sound in "they" and "that.")
  • 3) "I gazed—and gazed—but little thought" uses repetition for emphasis. (The repetition of "gazed" emphasizes the prolonged and deep contemplation.)
  • 5) Repetition can be found in "then my heart with pleasure fills." (The repetition of the "th" sound in "then" and "with" is a form of consonance, a type of repetition that involves similar consonant sounds within words or at the end of words.)
