(a)
4x^(10) - 9x^(10)

Both terms
4x^(10) and
- 9x^(10) are like terms

They have same exponent
x^(10)

So we add or subtract the coefficents

4 - 9 is -5

4x^(10) - 9x^(10) =
- 5x^(10)

(b)
-5x^(10) - 5x^(20) - 36x^(10) - 36x^(20)

Combine like terms by adding or subtracting the coefficient of like terms

-5x^(10) - 36x^(10) - 5x^(20) - 36x^(20)

-41x^(10) - 41x^(20)
