The above excerpt is referencing and depicting tremendous changes to America due to movements that were being brought forth in the United States. The movement to which William Lloyd Garrison, author of The Liberator, was alluding to in the excerpt was abolitionism. During the early 18th and 19th centuries, abolitionism was a movement that came about because of the immoral practice of slavery, and it sought to end that practice. When Garrison was 25 years old, he joined the abolitionist movement and later became a very prominent voice for the advocating of ending slavery altogether. The above quote reflects this time period very well because Garrison was not one to stand down when the issue of human rights is threatened. His writings were full of passion and many rhetorical devices that were utilized in order to persuade his audience and hopefully open their eyes to the cruelty of keeping human beings as slaves, no matter their skin color.
