Binary covalent compounds: greek prefixes
example: CH4= carbon tetrahydride
binary ionic compounds: no greek prefixes
example: CaS= calcium sulfide
stock system: for metals w/ multiple oxidation numbers
example: Fe2O3= iron(III) oxide
