we can find at first area of the large rectangle
A (large rectangle)=4*12=48
then area of the small rectangle that was cut of the big one
A(small rectangle)=8*2=16
A(shaded)=48-16=32 m²

The area is 32m², because the area if it were a complete rectangle is 48m², but when the small portion that is missing, 16m², is subtracted from that, you are left with 32.
