The diploid stage of a plant that follows fertilization is called sporophyte. The diploid plant stage is called the sporophyte and it produces spores through meiotic (asexual) division. The multicellular haploid plant stage is called the gametophyte, which is formed from the spore and give rise to the haploid gametes.
